To be a champ was my great desire
Senior Olympics table tennis, my test of fire
Forgetting some may call me old
My heart's one wish, to win the Gold
"Come practice with me," to my family, I said
and they did just that before they fled
Not wanting to squelch my inner flame
they entered in to play the game
So the day arose and my nerves were taut
But on to the challenge - I would not back off
Well, my knee was a little slow to bend,
Unlike the challenger, my new found friend
I tried my best, of that I am proud
and did what my aging back allowed
My opponents had flames that arose from their feet
Their arms like rubber when the ball they would meet
I tried to feel good, but my heart was broke
with every slower moving stroke
Still when all was said and all was done
the best of us the trophy won
The greatest part was to participate
Before the clock said "It's now too late."
So thanks to all for letting me try - to once again be young and spry
I stand in awe of all who came
I'll be back next year for more of the same...
